The brief was straight-forward, begin a conversation over zoom with artist Lucila Novoa for a period of two months, meeting once a week. thereafter the artist will travel to the edition ~ verso studio in johannesburg to complete a one-month residency with the focus on collagraph printmaking.

The problematising is in-built. how does one use language to engage with what is inherently tacit? metaphor is one way, it is why so many are initially drawn to many things, notwithstanding printmaking - there is semblance of poetic abstraction and reliability on the sensory (as subjective as it is) perhaps (and) because of its subjectivity. Are there sufficient substitutes for jargon that is rather literally, hand-to-mouth? these are spiked, not only are they universals within fields but they are not specific.
So let’s stick with what is real, rather problematising from a place of what we can make possible… it will be unclear maybe, it will be uncertain yes again maybe, and it will be generative in and on its way.

Sci-fi landscape for love, became as Lucila put it, “a pure act of love”.

Lucila is a Colombian-Dutch artist based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands; she holds a Master of Art Praxis Degree from the Dutch Art Institute (Arnhem, NL). As an adoptee of color, displaced from Colombia to the Netherlands – without her consent – her artistic practice rethinks what it means to be human. Guided by black feminist thinkers such as Sylvia Wynter, Denise Ferreira da Silva and Saidiya Hartman, she argues that at the core of contemporary humanness lies a struggle defined by a racialized order of human existence. As a form of critical fabulation she’s introducing the figure of the human adoptee of color - whose life is lived in the absence of cultural memory and a historical archive - to explore the power of speculative absence by seeking hope and healing in the creation of new narratives and embodied experiences.
