 Sebastian Borckenhagen is an artist living and working in Berlin. Sebastian makes work in a range of media spanning experimental music, animation and ceramics. He has exhibited his paintings, drawings, numerous self-published zines and graphic novels locally and abroad. Sebastian was one of the first artists invited to work with edition ~ verso and has to-date, made an impressive body of print works in both oil and watercolour monotype, relief and linocut, chine-collé, collage and etching - all printed and published by edition ~ verso.

Sebastian’s 2016 series (watercolour and oil monotypes) with edition ~ verso, titled Hungry Ghost explores the emotional landscape of compulsivity and restraint, played out in improvised amalgamations of repeated motifs and characters.

In his second print residency (September/October 2018) together with edition ~ verso, Sebastian produced a series of monotypes using both oil and water-based mediums, at times incorporating collage and chine-collé elements from drawings made on hand-made hemp and cotton paper. Additionally, he explored the softground intaglio technique with chine-collé, resulting in a small edition of works made using two plates titled, Alexander. In this body of work, Sebastian brings his drawn world, of energetic play and reconfiguration, into a space of contemplative consideration. 

“I like cool shapes” says Sebastian Borckenhagen when discussing his new works made on a short-term residency with edition ~ verso in December of 2020. 
The two impressions made in the linocut technique speak to a style of work that Sebastian explored earlier in his practice. The various weightings of carved and uncut areas of the lino tile give a body and movement to the works, much like figures dancing. And, rather than clean up the incised reliefs of the tile, Sebastian embraces the medium - honouring his own hand in his deeply considered and adept process.
