Artists, photographers, musicians, writers and makers across disciplines are welcome to apply to our residency programme. The intention of the residency is to offer artists uninterrupted time in a well-equipped studio with offsite living accommodations.

This residency has proven to be a generative period for experimentation and collaboration. Artists can add to their work practice, explore new mediums, create an edition, or otherwise advance their printmaking skills.

Edition ~ verso strives to advance outcomes from the residenct that stimulate original and inventive work that the artist might not otherwise have reached without access to the edition ~ verso studio.

Each residency is tailored to meet an artist’s needs, offers a focussed period in which to make work in an assisted manner and/or to allow for self-led projects that may or may not include workshops in the various print techniques. We facilitate intaglio, relief, monotype and papermaking. We do not offer lithographic process.

Artists are able to focus on either a specific technique, the creation of a body of work and/or allow for a research-led programme that incorporates experimentation in what the studio has to offer.

Previous residents include, as seen above, left to right; Blake Daniels (USA/France), Felix Shumba (Zimbabwe), Lucila Novoa (Netherlands)

Papermaking Programme

Shop our Paper Products

As a conscious effort toward the importance of material properties, edition ~ verso collaborates with artists in the making of handmade paper. Using paper and cotton waste from the various studios (including our own) and local industry, we are able to generate a variety of pulp-based products. A variety of organic and inorganic materials can be used in our papermaking pulp to help conceptualise work and generate one-of-a-kind paper. We make custom paper to order, as well as aid artists and creatives with the process to develop their own paper and paper products.

This endeavour allows for artists working with edition ~ verso to include a facilitated paper making practice and/or paper making residency alongside the making of prints in the studio.

We have ongoing paper making projects in association with various institutes as well as independent studios, fashion designers and creatives. In collaboration with the bookbinding studio, PULP Paperworks, we have trained specialized technicians that aid in hosting workshops and facilitate the process within the studio.

For custom paper products, projects and/or questions please email us at editionverso@gmail.com

Publications

Proximal/Distal
Meteorites

As an affiliate practice to traditional printmaking, edition ~ verso is on occasion involved in the production of printed publications. These come in varying forms and always include the practice of transferring image/text from a matrix to substrate.

Proximal/Distal, a project initiated by Bettina Malcomess and Francis Burger both of whom work alongside edition ~ verso in the making of printed matter, is a collaborative project bringing together a network of geographically dispersed sound practitioners, artists and researchers for a series of digital relays, passes and points of engagement. In collaboration with Francis Burger, edition ~ verso  printed all of the fabric covers which held the printed, recorded and book matter together.
This work was featured at LUMA Arles on the AFROPHON artists’ books fair.
It is housed in the edition ~ verso studio and The Library of Things We Forget to Remember by artist Kudzanai Chiurai among other places.

Meteorites is a book of poems about childhood, curiousity, and reproach, written by writer/maker/curator Lavendhri Arumugam* – who grew up in East London and Johannesburg (South Africa) and now lives and works in London (United Kingdom).
Meteorites, a book of poems by Lavendhri Arumugam, co-published by Oriole Press and edition~verso, 2023. Available at Hopscotch Reading Room, Kurfürstenstraße 14/Haus B, 10785 Berlin, and by order.
